What are the Lemons in your Life?

Pam gave me one of her many pairs of La Sportiva Akashas a few months back. When handing them over she told me, “Take them apart or give them away, I don’t care what you do with them, just get rid of them!”

(Which is weird because the Akasha is such a great shoe).

So I did. I love taking shoes apart and looking inside at the various foams, plastic pieces, and textiles, so at first I didn’t question why she had handed them to me to be destroyed. As time went on and I discussed them with her, however, I realized exactly what had caused Pam such animus against those shoes. Apparently in these particular Akashas Pam had experienced quite a bit of misfortune; she’d gotten lost on a hillside in Wales, wiped out down an embankment in the Franklin Mountains, ran out of water on a warm race in Maine, and had just felt terrible on every run in them. She and I both love this particular model of shoe, so there wasn’t any particular reason why this pair would be different. It was just a lemon.

These lemons in our life don’t have to be trail running related. I am currently in the process of cleaning out and selling my old SUV.

(My old car does not look NEARLY as pretty as this stock photo).

In this particular vehicle, I had my rear tire cover destroyed/stolen, I’ve been rear-ended by a hit and run Mercedes driver, fallen asleep while driving and gone over a median, and to top it all off, I’ve had my brother’s dog throw up inside it repeatedly over the course of half an hour while I was stuck in traffic and unable to pull over. I’ve had a lot of bad luck in that car. It’s a lemon as well, and I’m glad I’m finally getting it out of my life.

I’m sure that in y’all’s lives you have lemons as well. These are objects, relationships, jobs, etc. that don’t necessarily look cursed or unlucky, but leave a trail of misfortune in their wake.

Do y’all have Lemons in your life? Are there objects you own or relationships that you have that seemed like a good idea at the time, but now seem to harbor nothing but bad luck? I look forward to your comments!

Sincerely,
Philip
